Volunteering doesn’t have to mean signing up for a long-term commitment!The holidays are a perfect time for these many acts of kindness. Here are some ideas.

  1. Host a fundraising event for the cause of your choice. Suggested charity
  2. Help out a neighbour by performing chores or errands.
  3. Pay for a meal for a Gathering Place guest.
  4. Share your holiday celebration with an international student at MUN.
  5. Donate a toy to the Happy Tree.
  6. Give blood. List of upcoming clinics
  7. Write letters of appreciation to members of your community (i.e. postal service workers, local storekeepers, cashiers at your favourite store).
  8. Find a story you loved when you were little and read it to a child.
  9. Organize a coat/warm winter clothing drive and donate items to a local shelter or other organization.
  10. Organize a neighbourhood food drive for the local food bank.
  11. Visit with elderly members of the community, or connect with the Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group.
  12. Donate your own clothing/toys/etc to a local shelter or daycare.
  13. At work: Charge admission for casual Friday or holiday party and donate proceeds to a suggested charity
  14. Adopt an animal or volunteer at the SPCA.
  15. Give the practical gift of a work animal to someone in a third world country. Oxfam
  16. Join CBCs Feed NL Day and donate food.
  17. Host an arts & crafts party/event for neighbourhood kids. Make ornaments and sell them to raise money for a special cause.
  18. Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
  19. Donate to Ronald McDonald House.
  20. Pay for someone’s stay at Daffodil Place.
  21. Compliment a stranger.
  22. Pay for someone’s coffee anonymously.
  23. Make a donation to the Janeway Foundation in someone else’s name.
  24. Give an unexpected tip to make a servers day.
  25. Bake some holiday cookies and share.
  26. Leave happy notes around the neighbourhood.
  27. Bring a box of new books to a local library, children’s hospital, or organization of your choosing.
  28. High-five your public transit driver and thank them for keeping you safe.
  29. Bring treats to the office to share with co-workers.
  30. Bring some blankets, dog food or pet toys to Heavenly Creatures Christmas Drive.
